The Meyerhoff Scholars Program at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) supports college success and encourages advanced study by underrepresented minority students. The program recruits and provides comprehensive financial aid packages to approximately 50 scholars from among prospective UMBC students who plan to pursue doctoral study in engineering or the sciences. Scholars participate in a summer bridge program prior to entering college, during which they complete for-credit courses in calculus and African American studies and non-credit courses in chemistry, physics, study skills, and time management. The program provides opportunities for student learning communities, mentoring, research, internships, and study abroad programs, integrating preparation for science and engineering careers with other academic and co-curricular supports.
Since its inception in 1993, the Meyerhoff Scholars program has graduated more than 600 students and achieved the significant results:
