The Business-Higher Education Forum is working in partnership with the Raytheon Company, Ohio State University, and other partners to develop a systems dynamics model to help policymakers, educators, and researchers identify measures that can increase the number of STEM-capable students and the number of STEM college graduates. The model shows the flow of students through the educational system and workforce and the potential impact of changes along the pathway. The model is intended to enable planners to analyze various scenarios, including changes in teacher capabilities, teacher salary, class size, and tenure and retention policies. In 2008, the STEM Research and Modeling Network, or SRMN, was formed to advance the development of the prototype model, with the intention of transitioning the model to open source for use by the public.
