Higher Education and the Common Core State Standards

March 15, 2010

The Common Core State Standards Initiative last week published a draft of proposed common standards in math and language arts that are designed to help states reach consensus on what it means to be college ready.

The initiative is a joint effort by the National Governors Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states are committed to the state-led process to develop a common core of college- and career-ready standards in English language arts and mathematics for grades K–12.

The American Council on Education (ACE) is highly supportive of this unprecedented national effort to raise student achievement to a college- and career-ready level. To ensure that the views of higher education faculty are incorporated into the standards, ACE has worked in partnership with the Conference Board on the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS), the Modern Language Association (MLA), and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to convene panels of faculty who have provided expert review of several drafts. ACE is very grateful to the faculty members who have played such an active role in crafting these standards, as well as our partners at CBMS, MLA and NCTE.

As states proceed to adopt the Common Core standards in 2010, ACE will partner with other organizations to disseminate information to colleges and universities and to facilitate conversations within higher education as well as with our elementary/secondary education colleagues about the implications of these standards for postsecondary education.

The NGA Center and CCSSO encourage those interested in the standards to provide feedback by Friday, April 2, 2010, at www.corestandards.org
