Dough Schoen, founding partner of Penn, Schoen, and Berland, argues that if the United States wants to retain its standing in the international community, we must abandon the failed carrots and sticks approach to education policy of No Child Left Behind, and act immediately and drastically to fundamentally reform and revitalize our education system. Schoen calls for the expansion of early childhood education, improvement in the teaching of science and math, and improvement in the quality of teacher education programs to maximize teacher performance and enhance teaching skills.

49 Applicants Win ‘i3’ Grants

The U.S. Department of Education unveiled the 49 winning applicants for the Investing in Innovation, or i3, fund. These ranked the highest of 1,698 entries in a mad dash for $650 million in grants.

Starting a Science Education

The United States has embarked on an ambitious program of education reforms that will include, for the first time, the potential of having as many as 48 states implement K-12 science education standards based largely on a conceptual framework being developed by the Board on Science Education of the National Academies. Though the work is separate from the Common Core State Standards Initiative of the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, organizers say they hope the effort will play an important role in reshaping state science standards.
